Exam Pressure? Here's How to Actually Deal With It

From someone who gets it

First — it's completely normal to feel nervous before exams. Even the most confident students feel it. The difference is what you do with that feeling.

Reframe your nerves Here's something wild: nervousness and excitement produce almost identical physical responses. Your heart beats faster. You feel alert. The only difference is how you interpret it. Tell yourself "I'm excited" instead of "I'm scared" — research shows this actually improves performance.

The 4-7-8 breathing technique When panic hits: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7, breathe out for 8. Do this 3 times. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system and physically calms you down within 60 seconds. Use it before entering the exam room.

What to do when your mind goes blank It happens to everyone. Don't panic. Write your name, the date, anything to get your pen moving. Move to a question you know. Come back to the hard one. Often your brain unlocks when you stop forcing it.

Put it in perspective Exams matter — but they're not the only path to success. Plenty of incredibly successful people didn't get the grades they wanted first time. Your worth as a person is not measured by your results. Do your best, and know that's enough.

Build your exam day ritual The night before: light review, proper dinner, early bed. Morning: breakfast, your favourite playlist on the way there, arrive early. Having a ritual reduces anxiety because your brain knows what to expect.
