Sleep, Food and Exercise — The Study Trio Nobody Talks About

Your body is your revision kit

You can have the best revision notes in the world, but if you're running on 4 hours sleep and energy drinks, you're fighting against yourself.

Sleep: non-negotiable Your brain consolidates memories during sleep — specifically during deep sleep cycles. If you sacrifice sleep to revise more, you're literally erasing what you studied. Aim for 8-9 hours. During exam period, protect your sleep ruthlessly.

Food: fuel properly Brain food is real. Omega-3 (oily fish, nuts, seeds) supports cognitive function. Complex carbs (oats, wholegrain bread) give steady energy rather than spikes. Stay hydrated — even mild dehydration impairs concentration. Limit caffeine after 2pm or it will wreck your sleep.

Exercise: the underrated study tool 30 minutes of exercise increases blood flow to your brain and releases BDNF — literally a protein that helps your brain form new connections. Students who exercise regularly during revision periods consistently perform better. Even a 20-minute walk helps.

Avoid the energy drink trap They spike your energy for an hour, then crash you hard. They mess with your sleep. They increase anxiety. For a student already under pressure, this is the opposite of helpful.

One practical routine Morning: breakfast + 10 min walk. Study blocks of 25 min with breaks. 30 min exercise in the afternoon. Light dinner. No screens after 10pm. 10-10:30pm wind-down. Asleep by 11pm.

Simple. Consistent. Powerful.
